Austin | Kalinina advances to Last 8 in Texas

Top seed Anhelina Kalinina stormed past Camila Osorio into the quarter-finals of the WTA 250 ATX Open in Austin, Texas, on Wednesday, where she will meet Diana Parry, while two Chinese, Yuan Yua and Wang Yafan also line up for a spot in the Last 4.

Kalinina improved her record against Colombian Osorio to 2-0, with a 6-1 6-2 win in. just 66 minutes to advance to her first quarter-final of 2024.

The Ukrainian, who was a finalist at the WTA 1000 event in Rome last season, has lost just 8 games in her two outings this week.

On Friday, she will face Diane Parry, the 5th seed from France, who was a 6-3 6-3 winner on Wednesday over Kamilla Rakhimova from Russia.

This is the second quarter-final of the season for the 21-year-old Frenchwoman after she reached the Last 8 at Auckland in January.

An all-Chinese contest is set for Friday following straight sets wins by both No 8 seed Yuan Yue and Wang Yafan.

Yuan was tested by American Taylor Townsend in a 6-3 7-6(5) win, while Wang advanced comfortably with a 6-2 6-2 win over Emiliana Arango from Colombia.

The 8th seed rallied from a 4-1 deficit in the second set of her match to force the tiebreak against Townsend, where she raced out to a 5-0 lead, while Wang improved to 2-0 overall against the Colombian, saving 9 of 10 break points in her win.

When they meet on Friday, both Yuan and Wang will be vying for a spot in their second semi-final of the year.

Yuan reached the Last 4 as a qualifier in her second event of the season at Hobart, Australia, while Wang was a semi-finalist earlier this month at Hua Hin, Thailand.
