Austin | Kalinina makes Last 4 but Collins and Sevastova retire injured

Top seed Anhelina Kalinina reached the semi-finals of the ATX Open in Austin, Texas, on Friday, and will meet Wang Xiyu for a place in the final, but both Danielle Collins and Anastasija Sevastova had to retire with injuries in the middle of their quarter-final matches.

I don’t really feel that I deserve it today. I’m sorry for what happened to Anastasia, what happened to her. I don’t wish that on any player. I hope she recovers really fast. She’s a great player, she played really good today and she deserved to win it. Anna Karolina Schmiedlova

Kalinina, ranked No 35 in the world and from Ukraine, pulled off a remarkable come-back to defeat 5th seed Diane Parry, 1-6 6-4 6-2, in 2 hours and 18 minutes after losing 9 of the first 11 games of the match, and trailing the Frenchwoman 2-4 in the second set.

She turned the tables, though, to win 10 of the last 12 games, rattling through the decider without facing a break point, winning just 46% of her first-serve points in the first set and improving to 80% in the third.

Kalinina, who has now won 3 of her 4 meetings with Parry, and the first off clay courts, reached her first semi-final since reaching the Rome final last May, and will face Wang Xiyu, the No 6 seed from China, in the Last 4 on Saturday.

Wang advanced to her second semi-final of the season after Collins, the American 3rd seed, retired due to a lower back injury in their quarter-final after losing the first set, 6-2.

“Sometimes this happens when the weather changes suddenly,” Collins said, according to the Austin American-Statesman. “I think that played a role. That’s arthritis for you. … It creeps up on you sometimes.”

She left the court in a wheelchair. playing one more point on the resumption, she pulled out of the match, and was wheeled off the court in a wheelchair.

“I don’t really feel that I deserve it today,” Schmiedlova said. “I’m sorry for what happened to Anastasia, what happened to her. I don’t wish that on any player. I hope she recovers really fast.

“She’s a great player, she played really good today and she deserved to win it.”

Bidding to make her first WTA final since 2019 Hobart, Schmiedlova will face 8th-seeded Yuan Yue, who won an all-Chinese contest against Wang Yafan, 6-3 7-5.

The two Chinese fought toe-to-toe to see who would reach their second semi-final of the season, with Yuan eventually winning after 2 hours of play.
