The semi-final line-up at the 2024 Australian is set after Daniil Medvedev and Sascha Zverev progressed from Wednesday’s quarter-finals. The pair will line up alongside Djokovic and Sinner on Friday for a place in Sunday’s final.
First to progress was Daniil Medvedev, who overcame Hubert Hurkacz 7-6(4), 2-6, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4. The third seed has only won one of his five matches in straight sets so far, and had to contend with a 3.40 am finish in the earlier rounds.
In the night session, Sascha Zverev flipped the script to defeat Carlos Alcaraz 6-1, 6-3, 6-7(2), 6-4 with a high-quality performance.

Medvedev Survives Hurkacz in Five Sets
Daniil Medvedev is through to the Melbourne semis for the third time in four years thanks to a 7-6(4), 2-6, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 victory over Hubert Hurkacz.
The first two sets featured some high-quality, lengthy baseline exchanges with little to separate the two as Hurkacz levelled the match after dropping the first in a tie break.
In the third, the Russian looked to be feeling the effects of the tough matches he’s played during the fortnight, but he knuckled down to capture the set 6-3.
An immediate break then put the third seed large and in charge en route to a 4-2 lead. However, Hurkacz is known for his steady play, and he has the ability to reel off games without seemingly doing anything special.
That was the case here as suddenly, Medvedev found himself down 5-6. A forehand blazed long on set point gave the Pole the set to force a deciding fifth set.
Medvedev again put the fatigue to the back of his mind and managed to find a second wind, which allowed him to break in the seventh game and erase the break back point with some rare serve and volley play, a tactic he employed several times in the latter stages to keep the points shorter.
I’m so destroyed right now. It’s not that I ran out of gas but I was already feeling very tough physically by the second set. In the fourth set, I had no more concentration, and I just had to try my best. If I lose, I lose and go home. It’s ok. I’m happy that I managed to win. Medvedev on digging deep to defeat Hurkacz.

Zverev Sends Alcaraz Packing
It looked like the Australian Open might have the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th seeds in the semi-final for the first time since 2019, but Sascha Zverev had other ideas as he took out Carlos Alcaraz 6-1, 6-3, 6-7(2), 6-4 to reach the last four in Melbourne for the second time.
In the opening two sets, the German was on fire, dominating with his serve and super clean ball striking from the baseline, which Alcaraz had no real answers to.
That trend continued into the third up until 5-3, when Zverev got a little tight when trying to serve it out. That tightness resulted in a few less mph on his groundstrokes, which allowed Alcaraz to find some rhythm, and he broke back.
The set went into a tiebreak, and although Alcaraz started with two poor errors to give Zverev a mini-break, his game started to catch fire as he reeled off the next 7 points to steal the set.
From that moment you felt like the Spaniard was going to take control especially after Zverev took a medical timeout for a foot issue during the changeovers.
And despite Zverev breaking immediately at the start of set, Alcaraz hit straight back to level and from there started to enjoy a bit more success in the rallies.
However, en route to holding for 4-4, Zverev came up with some excellent court coverage to escape a deuce game before he broke to lead 5-4.
This time around there were no mistakes, and while still understandably more cagey in the rallies, he came up with some decent first served to get across the line.
I was playing one of the best players in the world. Over the past two years he has been No. 1 or No. 2 constantly. He’s won two Grand Slams, and when you are up 6-1, 6-3, 5-2, you start thinking. We are all human and it is a great honour to play against guys like him. When you’re so close to winning your brain starts going and it is not always helpful, but I’m happy that I got there in the end. I fought back quite well in the fourth set, didn’t let go and I’m very happy that I finished the match. Zverev on his win over Alcaraz.
