Sinner Ends Djokovic Melbourne Streak
Jannik Sinner is through to his first Grand Slam final with a somewhat surprising 6-1, 6-2, 6-7(6), 6-4 over Novak Djokovic.
The loss was Djokovic’s first in an Australian Open semi-final (W10:L1) and ended his 33-match winning streak at the Happy Slam, having last lost there to Hyeon Chung in 2018.
Sinner has been the best player in the tournament so far, having not dropped a set en route to the semi-finals, and he backed that up with a dominant performance that Djokovic had no real answers to.
Apart from a minor wobble towards the end of the third set and in the tiebreak, which saw Djokovic save a match point to force a fourth set, the Italian was by far the stronger player in all areas, not facing a single break point and breaking the Serb five times.
Sinner used his heavy baseline game to keep Djokovic behind the baseline throughout, and with Djokovic firing 54 unforced errors, the 4th seed was able to play a measured game, never having to push the envelope too much as it was Djokovic who was making the errors.
While Sinner will line in Sunday’s final, Djokovic leaves Melbourne with a bit of a mixed bag. His level was very up and down, and he never quite got going. He was shaky early on, steadier in the middle rounds, but finished with a flat performance in what was only the 2nd Grand Slam match of his career in which he didn’t fashion a single break point.
It was a very, very tough match. I started off really well. For two sets, I felt like he was not feeling that great on court, so I just tried to keep pushing. Then, I had a match point in the third set, and I missed the forehand, but this is tennis. I also tried to be ready for the next set, which I started off well. And obviously, the atmosphere was so great to play here. Sinner on his win over Djokovic.

Medvedev Fights Back to See Off Zverev
For the second time in the tournament, Daniil Medvedev recovered from two-sets-to-love down to see off rival Alexander Zverev 5-7, 3-6, 7-6(4), 7-6(5), 6-3.
The win sees Medvedev make the final in Australia for the third time, and it was the fourth time in his career that he’s managed to come from two sets down, also achieving the feat against Emil Ruusuvuori in the first round here.
Much like his quarter-final against Alcaraz, Zverev started the match in fine form, outplaying Medvedev from the baseline with his heavy ball striking. to establish a two-set lead.
However, in the third, Medvedev found a little bit extra on his groundstrokes, which prevented Germany from playing on the front foot as he’d done since the start of the match. That came to bear fruit in the tiebreak as the third seed reeled off three points in a row from 4-4 to find a route back into the match.
The fourth set followed a similar pattern and resulted in a tiebreak. Zverev isn’t renowned as one of the best closers in the game, but a double fault from Medvedev at 4-4 was just the sort of bonus he was looking for.
What he didn’t want, though, was a complete mishit return that turned into a perfectly executed drop shot that he could do nothing about. Medvedev then reeled the next two points to force the fifth.
Probably still thinking about Medvedev’s fortune to make that ball at 4-5 in the breaker, that was the end of Zverev’s resistance as his game faded, allowing Medvedev to break twice in the set, ultimately coasting across the finish line.
First set, honestly, I think we both didn’t play that well/ The second set, I thought I played a bit better than the first set. He played very well, 6-3, two breaks; I didn’t have chances on his serve. I was a bit lost, but during the third set, I said if I were going to lose this match, I would be proud of myself. I want to fight until the end, and if I lose, I lose, and I managed to win, and I am very proud. Medvedev on his turnaround vs Zverev.
Check the stats below; Sascha won two more games and four more points than Medvedev. A tough match to lose.
