Badosa suffers stunning upset in first round of Madrid home tournament

Paula Badosa enjoys playing at the Madrid Open, but her 2024 run was cut short by a defeat to the world no. 93, Jessica Bouzas Maneiro.

Bouzas Maneiro, ranked higher than Badosa at world no. 101, emerged as the favorite in the match. Despite Badosa’s Indian Wells Open title and previous world no. 2 ranking, Bouzas Maneiro clinched the victory.

Badosa has been battling a chronic back injury that threatens her career, but she was able to compete at the WTA 1000 tournament in her home country before making an early exit.

Despite losing the first two games, Badosa fought back to win six consecutive games, taking the first set 6-2. In the second set, she faced difficulties but managed to save break points and fought hard.

The match went into a decider after Badosa lost the second set 3-6. Bouzas Maneiro seized the opportunity in the third set, winning crucial points and eventually clinching the match 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Bouzas Maneiro showed nerves but ultimately prevailed over Badosa. Despite a late resurgence, Badosa couldn’t sustain her level and fell short in the final moments of the match.
