Baker Mayfield had an exciting renaissance season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last year and was able to parlay a career-best performance on a 1-year deal into a 3-year extension worth $100 million as he looks to follow up on the team’s impressive run to an NFC South title and a playoff victory over the Philadelphia Eagles.
Now that he is taken care of financially, all eyes are on his protection getting taken care of, as left tackle Tristan Wirfs is also up for a new deal.
Mayfield recently spoke out about Wirfs’ contract situation and said that he “knows those front office guys pretty well” and doesn’t think this situation will drag on much longer, adding “I don’t think they’re gonna let him go.”

Mayfield also spoke highly of the front office’s drafting ability and noted how they like to take care of the players they drafted, so he doesn’t sound worried in the slightest about the Wirfs situation getting dealt with.
He also shed some light on the team’s new center, Graham Barton out of Duke, who the team made the 26th overall selection in the 2024 draft and who will immediately be expected to step in as the team’s starting center.
Wirfs is one of the league’s best left tackles, and that is not a position teams often mess around with.
If you have a franchise left tackle, you pay him, and it seems like Baker and the front office are going to be on the same page and get a Wirfs deal done sooner rather than later.
