Barcelona remains interested in Julián Álvarez, continuing negotiations with Atlético Madrid regarding the possibility of acquiring the Argentine forward, as reported by Sport.
While reaching an agreement is complicated, the ongoing discussions indicate Barcelona’s strong interest in the 25-year-old, despite his inconsistent performance in recent months.
This season, Álvarez has netted just seven goals across 18 league matches.
Barcelona views him as a prime candidate to succeed Robert Lewandowski.
Is a Transfer Possible?
Álvarez’s playing style aligns well with Barcelona’s preference for energetic forwards who excel in a possession-heavy environment while delivering key goals.
However, any potential transfer faces significant hurdles. Having recently joined Atlético, Álvarez is bound by a contract that extends until the summer of 2030.
This agreement includes an extensive €500 million release clause, which would necessitate Atlético’s full cooperation for a transfer to occur.
Atlético views Álvarez as a crucial part of their attacking lineup, and they are generally reluctant to reinforce a domestic rival unless a compelling offer is made.
Reports indicate that Barcelona does not intend to accelerate their pursuit until the summer transfer window.
January Transfer Window Unlikely

Barcelona could be in a position to act if Arsenal decides against a £45 million transfer for Álvarez in 2026.
