Beijing Open: Muchova defeats Sabalenka once again to advance to the semi-finals against Zheng

Beijing | Muchova mugs Sabalenka, again, to meet Zheng in the Last 4

Karolina Muchova upset Aryna Sabalenka in the quarter-finals of the China Open, securing a spot in the semi-finals against Zheng Qinwen. Muchova reflected on her improvements and fitness challenges throughout the year. The unseeded Czech player defeated the top-seeded Sabalenka in a thrilling match that lasted nearly three hours, ultimately breaking Sabalenka’s 15-match winning streak.

Sabalenka, the World No. 2, was favored to win the China Open after a successful season with victories at the Australian Open, Cincinnati, and the US Open. However, Muchova’s crafty game and superior net play proved to be a challenge for the Belarusian player. Sabalenka acknowledged Muchova’s great returns and aggressive play, conceding that the match was filled with high-quality tennis.

Despite dropping the second set, Muchova fought back in the third, showcasing her resilience and determination. Sabalenka struggled to maintain her momentum, allowing Muchova to dominate the latter part of the match and secure victory. The Czech player credited her improved game and strategic approach for the win.

This victory marks the third consecutive win for Muchova against Sabalenka, further solidifying her position as a formidable opponent on the tour. Muchova’s comeback from wrist surgery earlier in the year has been impressive, with strong performances in several tournaments. She will now face Zheng Qinwen in the semi-finals, setting the stage for an exciting matchup between two rising stars in women’s tennis.
