Berrettini Overjoyed After Victory at ‘Special Location’

Berrettini Cruises Past Shapovalov Into Stuttgart Open Quarter-Finals

Matteo Berrettini claimed his second trophy of the 2024 season at the Swiss Open in Gstaad by defeating Quentin Halys in straight sets.

Despite previous lack of success due to injuries, Berrettini showcased his talent with two victories this year, starting with Marrakech and culminating in Gstaad.

Gstaad holds a special place in Berrettini’s heart as it marked the site of his first ATP title in 2018. Following this recent win, he reflected on the journey and growth he has experienced since then.

“It feels unbelievable. It feels like it was yesterday that I won my first title here six years ago, but a lot of matches and a lot of things happened. I’m just so glad that I can keep playing and enjoying, and I think I found the energy of six years ago during this week. This place is special for me. I’m just so happy.”

The final match this year saw Berrettini as the clear favorite, given his experience and form throughout the tournament. His opponent, in his first final, couldn’t match Berrettini’s dominance.

Berrettini expressed pride in his performance, especially in managing the final against an ambitious adversary.

“It was his first final, so for sure a lot of thoughts you might think in those moments, especially when you stop and you just got broken. At the beginning, I was trying to figure out how to play, because during the week the conditions were really different.”

Berrettini had a comfortable victory, dominating both sets and securing the match with a 6-3, 6-1 scoreline.

A brief rain delay disrupted Halys’ rhythm during the first set, from which he couldn’t recover. Despite challenging conditions all week, Berrettini thrived after the delay.

“Every day was different. It was really windy, then it was a bit wet, and today was really cold and drizzling. It took me a little bit. I was able to not get broken from 0-40 and I think from then on I found the right energy. I think when we stopped, I came back on court and found the perfect [rhythm].”
