Berrettini Remembers ‘Sad And Injured’ Times After His First Title Since 2022

Berrettini Remembers ‘Sad And Injured’ Times After His First Title Since 2022

Matteo Berrettini is back in the winners’ circle, and it’s thanks to a fantastic week at the 2024 Marrakech Open.

The Italian has struggled a lot over the past two years. Since reaching the 2021 Wimbledon final, Berrettini has been backed for great success on the ATP Tour, but he never managed to fully fulfil his potential, as his body was stopping him.

From COVID-19 at Wimbledon, to multiple injuries, the journey has been tough for the 27-year-old, who hasn’t played since last year’s US Open prior to this year’s comeback at the ATP Challenger in Phoenix, where he reached the final.

Despite his success in Arizona, the Italian didn’t manage to follow up on that at the Miami Open, where he lost to Andy Murray in his first match, but Berrettini’s fortunes changed in Marrakech.

He was better than everyone else at the tournament, winning his first title since 2022, and it was clear that he was emotional about it, also during the trophy ceremony, when he thanked his team for sticking with him.

“I want to thank my team. It’s been a tough past couple of years, I would say, and thanks to them I was able to overcome all the tough moments. My body wasn’t allowing me to play, so it’s thanks to [them] that I am here.”

The Italian also remembered the times when things weren’t going well, when he was sad and injured. There were always people, friends and family, who helped him in those times, and that’s why he remembered also them during the speech.

“[I also want to thank] all the people that made my comeback possible. All my friends, my family, people that were with me all the times when I was sad and injured, and I didn’t think I could make it, so thank you very much.”
