Big names lead the way in U.S. Open Cup Round of 16 as Sounders, LAFC, and Atlanta United steal the spotlight

The 2024 U.S. Open Cup Round of 16 field is set.

Thursday’s draw featured all 16 winners from this week’s Round of 32 action, which includes six MLS clubs and one MLS NEXT Pro side. LAFC, Seattle Sounders, FC Dallas, Sporting KC, San Jose Earthquakes, and Atlanta United all advanced to the Round of 16 while NYCFC II remains as the lone MLS NEXT Pro representative.

The Round of 16 schedule will take place between May 21-22.

Detroit City FC pulled the biggest shock of the Round of 32 by defeating reigning USOC winners Houston Dynamo 10-9 in penalties after a 3-3 regulation scoreline. New Mexico United also claimed an MLS scalp by eliminating Real Salt Lake 4-2 while NYCFC II defeated USL side Colorado Springs Switchbacks 1-0.

Only four clubs remaining have lifted the U.S. Open Cup in the past, with the Seattle Sounders and Sporting KC winning the competition three times apiece, FC Dallas winning it twice, and Atlanta United lifting the trophy once.
