MUNICH — Bayern Munich has confirmed that former player and German national team defender Jérôme Boateng will not be joining the club to pursue his coaching career. This decision follows protests from fans regarding his previous conviction for causing bodily harm to his former partner.
Bayern’s head coach, Vincent Kompany, who played alongside Boateng, had expressed support for the idea of Boateng observing training sessions as he transitions into coaching.
Opposition from the fans manifested in banners that criticized Boateng’s potential involvement. A Munich court had previously convicted Boateng of causing bodily harm, resulting in a suspended fine and a formal warning. The former defender has consistently maintained his innocence.
In a statement released on Saturday, Bayern revealed, “In a constructive exchange between FC Bayern and Jérôme Boateng this week, it was decided that Jérôme Boateng will not be visiting FC Bayern to observe training.”
<p"The player expressed a strong connection to FC Bayern and wished to prevent any negative impact on the club amid the current controversy."
<pBoateng addressed the situation through Instagram, stating that he has chosen to explore other opportunities "following the recent discussions" surrounding him, while emphasizing his desire for the club to concentrate on their on-field performance.
<pLast month, Boateng officially retired from professional football. He had mutually agreed to part ways with Austrian club LASK Linz in August, even though his contract had a year remaining. Boateng previously achieved significant success with Bayern, winning the Champions League twice and the World Cup with Germany in 2014.
