Inclement weather has dogged the WTA 250 Copa Colsanitas Zurich in Bogotá, Colombia, this week, added to which a power cut in the city also impacted the schedule on Thursday.
With rain every day, 2nd-round matches were still being played on Day 4, and the one involving two-time defending champion Tatjana Maria from Germany and Argentine Julia Riera on the Cancha Central was suspended for at least 3 hours, first because of the rain, and then shortly after due to the power outage that lasted for another hour.
It is possible that the rains caused the technical fault in the city’s power grid, bringing the match to a standstill, but while the players left the court to sit out the long delay, exuberant Colombian fans stayed until the resumption of play at around 8.40 pm local time.
The delays didn’t help Riera, who lost all her momentum after taking the first set 6-2 off the German and the rains came.
On resumption after the washout, she lost the second set 6-0 as errors crept into her game, but the young Argentine regained her composure at the start of the third, breaking Maria to take a 2-1 lead before play was paused due to the aforementioned power loss.
Again, Riera’s rhythm was affected, and when the match resumed for a second time, she did not win another game, as Maria closed out the 3-set win under the lights.
Eventually, Maria, the 2nd seed who is ranked 46, moved into the quarter-finals with a 2-6 6-0 6-2 win over the 111th-ranked Riera at the Country Club Bogota, and the German mother of two will meet home favourite and 2021 champion Camila Osorio, the 6th seed, on Friday.

7th seed Laura Siegemund came from a set and 2-4 down to defeat Fran Jones in the Last 16 in Bogotá in the early hours of Friday morning

Because of the late-night finish, the match between Britain’s Francesca Jones and Laura Siegemund, the No 7 seed, was moved to an outside court, and the German prevailed, 6-7(4) 6-4 6-2, to advance to the quarter-finals in the early hours of Friday morning after coming from a set and 2-4 down to prevail.
The 36-year old is ranked 89, and will face top seed Marie Bouzkova next, after the Czech beat American Hailey Baptiste, 6-3 6-4, on the main court.
Completing the Last 8 line-up is 8th-seeded Kamilla Rakhimova from Russia, who had to go the distance against Mexico’s Renata Zarazua, eventually winning through, 7-6(4) 6-7(5) 6-3, to face 4th-seeded Cristina Bucsa from Spain, a rare winner on Wednesday over German Jules Niemeier, 6-4 6-1.
Already settled on Wednesday was the quarter-final between Sara Errani and Irina Bucsa, after the Italian upset Spain’s 4th seed Sara Sorribes Tormo, 6-2 4-6 6-4, and the Spaniard took out Brazilian Laura Pigossi, 6-3 6-7(3) 6-4.
