Neymar’s Fitness Concerns Prompt Discussions in Brazil
Brazil’s national football team coach Carlo Ancelotti expressed that everyone associated with the team is hoping for Neymar’s return to optimal fitness as he continues to recover from muscular injuries that have kept him from participating in national matches. Neymar, the all-time leading scorer for Brazil, has not played since suffering an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury during an international game in October 2023.
When questioned about the frequent inquiries regarding Neymar’s status, Ancelotti replied, “No, I don’t mind. It’s natural for people to ask because Neymar is a legendary figure in Brazilian football.” He emphasized that everyone, including the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), the coaching staff, and players, are eager for Neymar to regain his best form.
Ancelotti noted that for Neymar to be considered for the national team, he must achieve good physical condition, stating, “Modern football demands more than just talent; it requires physical preparedness and intensity. We hope Neymar reaches his highest level soon.”
After rejoining Santos, the club where he began his career, in January, Neymar is racing against time to be fit for the 2026 World Cup. Despite having recently returned to the field following a 48-day layoff due to injury, he faced criticism for his reaction to being substituted in the 85th minute during a 3-2 loss to Flamengo. His outburst on the pitch raised eyebrows among fans and analysts alike.
Santos’s executive director, Alexandre Mattos, supported Neymar, sharing a photo of him on social media accompanied by a message celebrating Neymar’s talents and contributions. “Geniuses are often misunderstood,” Mattos elaborated. “They think differently and strive for goals that few accomplish. They create legacies and histories while being human, experiencing both highs and lows. They endure life’s challenges, yet they emerge stronger.” Mattos expressed admiration for Neymar as not just a player, but as a person, highlighting his humility and compassion.
In the ongoing Brazilian league season, Neymar has scored three goals in 15 matches, with Santos currently struggling to avoid relegation.
