Maresca Praises Estêvão After Historic UEFA Champions League Night
Enzo Maresca expressed his admiration for Chelsea winger Estêvão following the team’s impressive 5-1 victory over Ajax, in which they became the first club ever in Champions League history to have three teenagers score in a single match.
In a recent friendly that ended in a 1-1 draw between Brazil and Tunisia, Estêvão, 18, was instrumental, successfully converting a penalty at the 44-minute mark to equalize the score. However, in the 77th minute, when Brazil was awarded another penalty, coach Carlo Ancelotti opted for teammate Lucas Paquetá to take the kick. Unfortunately, Paquetá’s shot sailed over the crossbar.
Estêvão remarked on the decision, stating, “I really wanted to take the spot-kick, but the order came in. I supported my teammate so he could score the goal. Unfortunately, he missed, but heads held high, we have to train and improve because in a World Cup we have to take advantage of these opportunities.”
Reflecting on his choice, Ancelotti explained, “For the second penalty, I changed the designated taker to relieve some pressure from Estêvão. I substituted Paquetá, who is usually effective with penalties.”
Paquetá offered his apologies for his missed opportunity, saying, “I regret missing the penalty. I’m feeling sad. With that penalty, we probably would have secured a win. I’ve had great success scoring at my club, but anxiety got the best of me, leading to an early decision before my kick.” He committed to improving his penalty-taking skills in future situations.
Despite Brazil finishing the year without a victory, Estêvão chose to focus on the positives. The young talent joined Chelsea from Palmeiras for £29 million ($38.6 million) this summer and quickly found his footing in the Premier League. He has netted five goals across 11 appearances for the national team.
“It’s been a very special year,” Estêvão said. “I managed to handle everything that came my way. Being here with the national team shows that the work has been effective at both the club and home levels. I am proud to represent Brazil.”
