The 2024 Hangzhou Open will be held from September 18th to 24th, and the prize money distribution has been revealed for the inaugural edition of the ATP 250 tournament.
Attention turns to the Asian swing after the completion of the US Open and the North American hardcourt season. The Hangzhou Open is one of two tournaments taking place in the first week of the swing, alongside the Chengdu Open.
It will be the first edition of the tournament. Last year, the Zhuhai Championships took place during the same week as the Chengdu Open, but that event has been discontinued, and the tournament in Hangzhou has replaced it.
The Hangzhou Olympic Sports Expo Center is the venue for the ATP 250 tournament. Observing the conditions will be fascinating since no previous ATP matches have been played at the Center.
There are many exciting names on the entry list. Holger Rune, Karen Khachanov, and 2014 US Open champion Marin Cilic are among the players set to compete at the Hangzhou Open for the first time.
Although professional players are competitive regardless of the financial incentives on offer, the $1,000,630 distributed at the tournament will give those on the entry list extra motivation to perform well.
The champion at the Hangzhou Open will receive $152,240 for their achievement, which is higher than many other ATP 250 events, as well as getting 250 ranking points to help them climb the rankings.
A sizeable $88,795 is the reward for the runner-up at the Hangzhou Open. The losing finalist will also get 165 ranking points, 15 more than players were awarded until the ATP changed the rules at the start of 2024.
Both losing semifinalists will be given 100 ranking points at the Chinese tournament and $52,195 in prize money. A semifinal run can still be good enough for players to climb significantly in the rankings, especially if they are one of the lower-ranked men in the draw.
There are a few players who might fancy their chances of reaching at least the semifinal and upsetting others in the draw, like Rune, who will be the top seed at the 2024 Hangzhou Open.
Brandon Nakashima is enjoying a terrific comeback season and is likely to be dangerous in China, while Yoshihito Nishioka has performed well in Asian conditions several times throughout his career.
Players like Cilic, who is using a wild card after suffering from many injuries in recent years, will be happy to get any victories. The Croatian would be rewarded with 25 points and $17,560 for getting to the second round.
The eight players who make it to the quarterfinals will receive $30,245 in prize money and 50 ranking points. Those who lose in the first round will not receive ranking points but are still set to pocket $10,730. The full prize money and points distribution for the 2024 Hangzhou Open can be seen below.
