The best way to judge individual achievement is to measure how you are rated by your peers.

For San Francisco running back Christian McCaffrey, that measurement grew in stature this week when rising New York Jets star rusher Breece Hall weighed in on the NFL’s hierarchy of running backs.

The third-year tailback out of Iowa State told the New York Post that McCaffrey is currently the gold standard by which all others who toil in his position are measured.

“I feel like right now McCaffrey’s the best in the league. To me, he sets the standard,” Hall said.

After suffering injury setbacks that kept him from achieving his full potential entering the league, Hall is widely expected to be a breakout star in what may be a season to remember for the Jets.

And when the dust settles, he will compare his accomplishments to those of a peer on the opposite end of the country.

But Hall will get a much more up-close look at his rival when New York and San Francisco open the NFL season on Monday Night Football.

“We’re going to see him in Week 1, and we’re playing against some of the best linebackers. For me, it’s exciting just to see where I stand and really let everyone see my full talent now that I’m healthy.”

Hall could not have chosen a better standard bearer than McCaffrey, who enters 2024 off a stellar campaign that saw him lead the NFL in rushing and take home Offensive Player of the Year honors.

Week 1 should be a lot of fun.
