Brisbane: Medvedev Pleased with Season-Opening Victory

At the Brisbane International, kicking off the tennis calendar with a buzz, Daniil Medvedev has emerged as the top seed in the men’s 250-level tournament, sharing the stage with the concurrent women’s event before the Australian Open. Medvedev, previously absent from Brisbane for seven years, marked his return with a solid first-round performance, taking just 70 minutes to dispatch Marton Fucsovics, demonstrating his prowess with a 6-2, 6-3 victory.

“I played really well, and I am pleased with my performance today,” Medvedev remarked after the match. He acknowledged a few hiccups with his serve but was particularly satisfied with his baseline play. The Russian, who is currently ranked 13th in the world and is a former world No. 1 and US Open champion, now looks ahead to a second-round clash against Frances Tiafoe, who effortlessly defeated local wildcard Alexander Vukic 6-2, 6-2 in his opener.

In pursuit of his 22nd career title, Medvedev has bolstered his team by bringing on Thomas Johansson as his coach late last season. “It was a testing period last year,” he reflected on their collaboration. “We had some time at the end of the season to evaluate our working relationship. It was fruitful, both in terms of results and our connection, and we had a strong preseason.”

Earlier in the day, defending champion Jiri Lehecka made his way into the second round with a gritty win over countryman Tomas Machac, sealing the match with a scoreline of 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-2. Lehecka narrowed down his opportunities effectively, saving both break points he faced throughout the contest. Awaiting him in the next round is Sebastian Korda, who overcame Frenchman Valentin Vacherot with a score of 7-6(1), 6-3.

Another notable performance came from Alex Michelsen, who triumphed over James Duckworth after a challenging three-set encounter ending 6-7(4), 7-6(2), 6-3. He is set to face the young and talented Learner Tien, the eighth seed in this tournament and a rising star in the tennis world.

Reilly Opelka, the finalist from the previous year, also continued his campaign successfully by defeating Dane Sweeny in straight sets, concluding the match at 6-3, 7-5. Opelka’s next opponent is Kamil Majchrzak, who will challenge him for a spot in the quarterfinals. Moreover, Quentin Halys fought back against Australian Alexei Popyrin, sealing his victory with a score of 5-7, 6-3, 6-4.

As excitement builds, several first-round matches remain to be contested, including a highly anticipated showdown between Cameron Norrie and Ugo Humbert. The Brisbane International promises gripping encounters as players vie for vital momentum leading into the Australian Open later this month.
