Brisbane Showdown: Medvedev Takes on Michelsen and Nakashima Faces Kovacevic

In an exciting run at the Brisbane International, three American players have made their way into the semifinals, and the only non-American presence is the top seed, Daniil Medvedev. This weekend’s matchups will see Medvedev face off against Alex Michelsen, and Brandon Nakashima will go head-to-head with Aleksandar Kovacevic.

Daniil Medvedev, the current world No. 1, is looking to reclaim his dominant form after breaking a two-year drought by winning the Almaty title in the fall. As the highest-ranked player remaining in the draw, he is widely considered the favorite to secure yet another ATP title this weekend. The 13th-ranked Russian has seemed to regain his competitive edge, achieving victories over Marton Fucsovics, Frances Tiafoe, and Kamil Majchrzak this week, losing only one set in a tight tiebreak to Majchrzak.

On Saturday, Medvedev will square off against Michelsen, who has yet to win against him in their previous encounters (2-0 in favor of Medvedev). Their first match occurred at the 2025 Indian Wells, where Medvedev advanced after Michelsen retired in the first set. Their second clash took place on the grass at Halle, with Medvedev triumphing in straight sets. Given that they are competing on a hard court in Brisbane, the conditions favor Medvedev, making this a formidable challenge for Michelsen, despite the 21-year-old American boasting impressive recent performances.

In the second semifinal, fans are treated to an all-American clash as Nakashima will meet Kovacevic for the first time. Nakashima’s journey to the semifinals has been impressively straightforward, as he secured his place by defeating Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, Quentin Halys, and Raphael Collignon, all in straight sets. On the other hand, Kovacevic has had a more challenging path, overcoming Nick Kyrgios in straight sets before engaging in two nail-biting three-set matches against Cameron Norrie and Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.

Although Kovacevic possesses flair and talent, Nakashima, ranked 33rd in the world to Kovacevic’s 58th, has a wealth of experience in high-stakes matches at Grand Slams and smaller tournaments alike, having tallied over 130 wins on the main tour compared to Kovacevic’s 32. This experience likely gives Nakashima the edge heading into their matchup.

As both semifinals promise high-quality tennis, fans are eagerly anticipating the outcomes as these players vie for a spot in the final of the Brisbane International.
