There will be several potential-laden quarterbacks in this year’s NFL Draft, and that crop goes well beyond Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, and Jayden Daniels.

J.J. McCarthy led the University of Michigan Wolverines to a victory in the College Football Playoff National Championship just last month, and he is thus an intriguing prospect.

The Denver Broncos are expected to cut ties with veteran QB Russell Wilson, and general manager George Paton had some nice things to say about McCarthy, per Zac Stevens.

“He’s a good player, just like seven or eight other quarterbacks,” Paton said. “We’re still working through the process. Obviously, he’s a winner. He’s won a lot. He has talent. So I look forward to spending time with him I think tonight.”

Because the Broncos once again missed the playoffs in 2023, they will have the No. 12 pick in April’s draft, which will likely give them the opportunity to select McCarthy.

They traded for Wilson about two years ago, thinking he would give them a great shot at reaching the Super Bowl, but for various reasons, that trade has turned into a failure.

Denver gave up five draft picks, two of which were first-rounders, to get Wilson, and one of those first-rounders turned into cornerback Devon Witherspoon, who made the Pro Bowl in 2023 as a rookie.

As a result, it is certainly time for them to cut their losses and start over again.

While Courtland Sutton and Jerry Jeudy are an underwhelming wide receiver duo, they have a young star corner in Patrick Surtain II, a veteran star safety in Justin Simmons, and an emerging outside linebacker in Jonathon Cooper.

They also have head coach Sean Payton, who could possibly help a quarterback they draft develop into a star, just as he helped Drew Brees reach his potential about 15 years ago.
