Buenos Aires | Jarry gets through tough second round

Buenos Aires | Jarry gets through tough second round

For the 28-year-old Chilean, Wednesday will live long in Nicolas Jarry’s mind after securing his 100th victory on the ATP Tour at the Argentina Open, a 250 level event being played in Buenos Aires.

It was a very tough match and I’m very happy with how I competed and stayed focused. It means a lot and I am very happy for this Nicolas Jarry

Not only is it a memorable career milestone, but also the fact that he downed the three-time grand slam winner Stan Wawrinka to reach that tally, completing his second-round match after two-hours and 51-minutes.

He won 6-7(3) 6-2 7-6(5) and as the score suggests, came through a tough decider before reaching the landmark and ends his run of never having won a match at the event in his previous meetings in the Argentine capital.

However, as the third seed, he faced and saved a match point when Wawrinka served for the match at 5-4 in the third set. Jarry broke back to love and then in the eventual tiebreak, he kept his nerve and serve to snatch the win.

“I didn’t know this was my 100th win; that’s amazing,” Jarry said. “It was a very tough match and I’m very happy with how I competed and stayed focused. It means a lot and I am very happy for this.”

Wawrinka was playing the event for the first time since he reached the final in 2013, having previously made the last four in 2011-12.

For Jarry this will be his second quarter final of the season Jarry but next plays Argentina’s Tomas Martin Etcheverry with whom he has played twice previously with both players sharing a victory.

Etcheverry enjoyed a comfortable 6-3 6-0 win over Colombian Daniel Elahi Galan, a Colombian qualifier, whom he broke six times for his victory.

Argentine wild card Facundo Diaz Acosta progressed to his second quarter-final in as many weeks with a 7-6(3) 6-0 upset of fourth-seeded countryman Francisco Cerundolo.

Serbia’s Dusan Lajovic joined him in the last eight following a 6-4 1-6 6-1 win over Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo who won the Auckland title at the start of the season.
