The Legends Tour, formerly known as the European Seniors Tour, returns to the Caribbean island of Barbados for the first time since 2009, when Apes Hill plays host to the first event of the tour’s new season from May 3-5.
The Barbados Legends is being hosted by Ian Woosnam, who is an ambassador for Apes Hill, as well as being a five-time winner on the over-50’s European circuit.
Opened in 2009, Apes Hill is the newest course in the Caribbean, with the Ron Kirby designed 7,041-yard layout occupying a stunning spot overlooking the Atlantic and set high in hills some 1,000 feet above sea level.
In addition to the 1991 Masters champion, the tournament has attracted a strong field, including 2003 PGA champion Shaun Micheel, 2005 US Open champion Michael Campbell, and 2009 Masters champion Angel Cabrera.
Cabrera was released from prison last August after serving a 30-month sentence for assaulting his ex-wife and several other former partners.
The 54-year-old Argentinian was reinstated on the PGA Champions Tour and the PGA Tour in December last year after his suspension from both tours was lifted. His last competitive tournament in the US was at the Pure Insurance Championship at Pebble Beach in September 2020.
He played in the Argentina Open in February, which is a Korn Ferry Tour co-sanctioned event, and had hoped to compete in last month’s Masters at Augusta, to which he has a lifetime exemption, but his application for a visa was turned down by the US government.
