Caddie Injured by thrown bottle at LIV Golf event in Adelaide

liv golf party hole

Lucas Herbert’s caddie Nick Pugh was struck by a flying water bottle on LIV Golf’s party hole in Adelaide…

It was a triumphant return for Ripper GC in Adelaide as they claimed victory in the sixth event of the 2024 LIV Golf season.

However, the Australian team’s first win in the Saudi-backed league wasn’t without incident, especially for Lucas Herbert’s caddie who was hit by a flying bottle on the par-3 12th hole during the second round.

Following Herbert’s successful putt on the ‘Watering Hole’, LIV Golf’s equivalent of the PGA Tour’s Stadium hole at TPC Scottsdale, fans celebrated by throwing various liquids onto the green.

Footage on X (formerly Twitter) captured the moment when a bottle struck Nick Pugh in the head as he was returning the flag to the hole.

“I was concerned about him at first, but he’s okay now,” Herbert commented afterwards via The Sydney Morning Herald.

“He’s fine, and he handled it really well. He could have been more upset, but he handled it well.

“It’s probably hard to ask someone who’s had 15 beers to aim a water bottle away from someone. That might be asking too much,” he added.

“(Branden Grace) made a putt from the top tier and some drinks landed on the green. That’s all in good fun and in the right areas so we can manage. Some went too far. But the crowd self-regulated and they received some boos when they threw things too close. That’s as wild as it should get.”

LIV Golf party hole: Too much or just a bit of fun?

The Watering Hole witnessed joyous, alcohol-infused celebrations last season when Chase Koepka scored a hole-in-one. This year marked the league’s second visit to Australia, drawing a crowd of 94,000 to the Adelaide venue to watch the world’s top players compete throughout the week.

The Grange Golf Club hosted LIV’s first-ever team playoff on Sunday, where Cameron Smith and Marc Leishman of Ripper GC faced Louis Oosthuizen and Dean Burmester of Stinger GC in a format where each player’s score counted on every hole.

After the South African duo both bogeyed the second playoff hole, Smith and Leishman respectively made a bogey and a par to claim the title.

Brendan Steele, representing Phil Mickelson’s Hy Flyers team, secured victory in the individual event and helped his team to just their second top-three finish since the league’s inception in June 2022.
