As reported by Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff, the Calgary Flames have reached a one-year agreement with defenseman Tyson Barrie. The contract is valued at $1.25 million for this season, and Barrie will become an unrestricted free agent once the deal concludes.
Barrie participated in Flames camp on a professional tryout (PTO) and recent rumors indicated a contract offer was likely.
Recent roster transactions hinted at this impending deal. Prospect Hunter Brzustewicz was reassigned to the minors on Thursday, potentially making way for Barrie to secure his NHL contract. During an interview on Flames Talk with Pat Steinberg, Frank Seravalli clarified: “[Brzustewicz’s] spot, I don’t think would affect Tyson Barrie.” He further stated, “I believe they’re signing Barrie regardless. If Brzustewicz earns a spot, it would likely push someone else out.” With no changes to the roster, Barrie’s path was cleared for the contract.

With his offensive prowess and power-play abilities, Barrie could be an excellent addition to Calgary’s lineup. Should he perform well, he might become a valuable trade asset at the season’s trade deadline. The Flames have strategically signed him to a contract that is attractive to other teams.
Barrie boasts 109 career goals and 505 points in 809 regular season games, aiming to demonstrate his value to the organization.
The contract reportedly lacks trade protection, giving the Flames the flexibility to trade him if deemed necessary.
