Scottish Premiership leaders Celtic might be without its top defender ahead of Saturday’s top-two showdown with Rangers.
American centerback Cameron Carter-Vickers limped off the field during Tuesday’s 3-0 road victory over Dundee FC due to a tight hamstring. Carter-Vickers missed ample time earlier this season due to injury before returning to action in earlier October.
The U.S. men’s national team defender has since returned to his starting role for the Glasgow-based club, featuring in both the UEFA Champions League and SPFL schedules. However, his second-half substitution on Tuesday has manager Brendan Rodgers worried over his involvement for Saturday’s visit of Rangers at Celtic Park.
“He’s hopefully okay,” Rodgers said postmatch.
“He felt a bit of tightness [in his hamstring] and we had said to him before that he didn’t need to be a hero. If he felt anything, just come off. We’re hoping he’s ok but we’ll find out in the next couple of days.”
The 25-year-old has made 17 club appearances this season, including four appearances for the U.S. men’s national team in October and November. After receiving plenty of individual accolades in 2022-23, Carter-Vickers has picked up where he left off by starring for Rodgers’ backline.
Carter-Vickers has helped Celtic to a 15-3-2 in the Premiership this season, sitting five points clear of Rangers heading into the second rivalry showdown of the campaign. However, his absence could prove to be a major loss as Celtic, who aims for a second-straight triumph over its local rivals this year.
