Laurie Canter secured his first DP World Tour title at the European Open in Germany with a thrilling victory. The 34-year-old from Bath started the final round at Green Eagle GC in Hamburg tied for the lead but had a slow start, playing his first ten holes in one over par. However, he regained his composure on the back nine, carding three birdies to finish with a one-under 72 and a total of 13 under, two shots ahead of Bernd Wiesberger and Thriston Lawrence.
Canter has come close to winning on the DP World Tour before, with four runner-up finishes, including at the Mauritius Open earlier this season. His victory in Hamburg comes after a top-10 finish at the Soudal Open in Belgium last week, marking a significant milestone in his career.
Reflecting on his long-awaited win, Canter expressed his joy and relief, stating, “I’ve always wanted to win on the DP World Tour, and now that I’ve done it, it’s going to open up some opportunities for me. If I’m going to try and climb the world rankings and get myself up and playing in the biggest tournaments in the world. You have to win and I think you only get that belief once you do it. Hopefully, it means I can push on and go from strength to strength.”
Despite a challenging journey that included joining and briefly playing on the LIV Golf tour, Canter’s perseverance and belief in his abilities paid off in the end. He spoke about the mental challenges of experiencing near misses in his career and how he overcame external pressure to finally secure a victory.
As Canter savored his well-deserved win, he reflected on the key moments of the final round and emphasized the importance of staying focused and believing in his own abilities. His determination and resilience were evident as he navigated the pressure-packed situation and emerged victorious.
