Cardiff City acquires Ethan Horvath on permanent deal

Ethan Horvath is headed back to the EFL Championship, but this time on a permanent deal.

Cardiff City has acquired the veteran shot-stopper on a permanent move from Nottingham Forest, both clubs announced. Horvath signed a three-and-a-half year deal with the Seagulls until June 2027.

“I’m really excited to be here,” Horvath said in a club interview. “It’s a massive Club here in Wales. I spoke to a lot of people about the Club before coming and they had nothing but positive things to speak about. They have history in the Premier League.

“The manager has ambitions, he has a plan and I’m really looking forward to being part of that. I’m going to do my best to help the Club reach their goals and ambitions,” he added.

The 28-year-old, who was left out of Nottingham Forest’s Premier League roster for the first half of the season, has not featured since preseason camp last summer.

Horvath spent last season on loan at then-Championship side Luton Town, helping the Hatters earn promotion to the top flight. He made 51 combined appearances for the Hatters, registering 20 clean sheets and finishing the campaign as one of the top goalkeepers in the second-tier.

“He is an international player with USA and got promoted from the Championship with Luton Town & Nottingham Forest,” Cardiff manager Erol Bulut said. “He knows the league and that is important for a goalkeeper. Right now, with Jak Alnwick and Horvath, we have two great goalkeepers.

“It’s important, you can not only have loan players. You have to sign permanent players. I think the next few years, the goal is safe here at Cardiff City.”

The Colorado native has earned nine caps for the USMNT, last featuring in a 4-0 friendly win over Oman last September.

Cardiff City sit 14th in the EFL Championship table and next visit Watford on February 3.
