Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has suggested that Manchester United will dismiss Erik ten Hag in the summer. Carragher expressed doubts about United’s ability to retain ten Hag after their disappointing performance in the FA Cup semi-final against Coventry City.
Manchester United narrowly defeated Coventry City in the FA Cup semi-final, despite being heavy favorites. The Championship team, led by former United player Mark Robins, put up a strong fight at Wembley Stadium on Sunday.
Instead of giving up after conceding three goals early in the match, Coventry staged a remarkable comeback. Goals from Ellis Simms, Callum O’Hare, and Haji Wright leveled the score at 3-3, forcing the game into extra time and eventually penalties. Although Manchester United’s Casemiro missed their first penalty, Coventry failed to capitalize, missing two crucial spot-kicks and ultimately losing the match.
Carragher noted the lack of celebration from United players after the unconvincing victory, suggesting that they were aware of the underwhelming nature of their performance.
Following the game, Carragher discussed the potential consequences for Erik ten Hag on Sky Sports. He expressed his belief that the FA Cup semi-final defeat may have sealed ten Hag’s fate as the United manager.
Carragher remarked, “We were watching at the end there and Mark Robins famously kept a Manchester United manager [Sir Alex Ferguson] in a job. I think that result there has cost a United manager his job. I don’t see how he stays, I don’t.”
He questioned whether ten Hag’s leadership and personality were suitable for leading Manchester United in the future, casting doubt on the manager’s ability to progress with the team.
Looking ahead, Manchester United will face reigning champions Manchester City in the FA Cup final at Wembley on May 25.
