Golf News Editor Nick Bayly recently took a trip to Cascais, a charming seaside town located just 30 minutes west of Lisbon, Portugal. This area offers a peaceful alternative to the bustling city streets, with a collection of excellent golf resorts nestled between sandy coves and seafood restaurants.
While the Algarve coast in southern Portugal has long been a popular destination for British golfers, the western coastline is quickly catching up with top-class golf courses and luxury resorts. Cascais, in particular, is becoming a hotspot for golfers looking for a more relaxed holiday experience.
One of the main attractions for golfers in the Cascais region is the Cascais Golf Passport, which allows players to save on green fees and easily book tee times at seven participating clubs. During his trip, Nick played four of these courses – Quinta da Marinha, Oitavos Dunes, Penha Longa, and Belas – all of which offered unique challenges and stunning views.
The base for Nick’s stay was the five-star Onyria Quinta da Marinha Resort, overlooking the Robert Trent Jones-designed 18-hole championship course. This modern hotel offers luxurious accommodations, multiple swimming pools, a spa, and three outstanding restaurants. The breakfast buffet was a highlight, with an automatic pancake-making machine impressing Nick and his group.
Quinta da Marinha, originally designed by Robert Trent Jones and opened in 1984, has hosted professional tournaments and offers a playable yet challenging layout with picturesque views of the coastline. Oitavos Dunes, a hybrid course featuring links and woodland golf, provides a dramatic setting with views of the Atlantic Ocean and Sintra Mountains.
Overall, Cascais offers a perfect blend of golf, luxury accommodations, and seaside charm, making it an ideal destination for golfers looking to unwind and enjoy top-quality golf courses in a stunning location.
