Two appearances. Two goals. It’s been a superb return to action for U.S. women’s national team attacker Catarina Macario.
Macario came off the bench on Sunday and delivered the winner for Chelsea in a 1-0 FA Cup quarterfinal triumph over Everton. Chelsea boss Emma Hayes called on Macario in the 63rd minute and the 24-year-old needed only three minutes to make an impact.
Aggie Beever-Jones raced down the right wing before cutting into the Everton box and finding Macario. Macario slotted home Beever-Jones’ pass into the bottom corner for a 1-0 lead that Chelsea would not relinquish.
Chelsea would hang on to reach the final four of the annual competition, joining Manchester United and Leicester City so far in the semifinals. Manchester City or Tottenham will join them later Sunday afternoon.
Macario missed ample time over the past two years due to a torn ACL, but has returned with a bang. After scoring her first goal for the club in last weekend’s road league win over Leicester City, Macario now has two goals in quick succession for the Blues.
Chelsea will next host Arsenal in WSL action on Friday before resuming UEFA W Champions League play against Dutch side Ajax in the quarterfinals.
