Champions Cup Rewind: Orlando City, Union held at home in first leg draws


Two of MLS’ competing clubs in the 2024 CONCACAF Champions Cup Round of 16 were held at home on Tuesday night.

Orlando City played out a 0-0 first leg draw with Liga MX opponents Tigres. Tigres goalkeeper Nahuel Guzman registered a three-save clean sheet, while Orlando’s Pedro Gallese made one save on the opposite end of the field.

Robin Jansson was denied by Guzman in the first half, which proved to be the only shot on target by either club through the opening hour of the match.

Francisco Cordova’s 70th minute effort was denied by Gallese, keeping the score level at 0-0.

Ramiro Enrique and Martin Ojeda was denied late chances to play the hero for Orlando City as the match finished goal-less at Exploria Stadium.

Estadio Universitario will play host to the crucial second leg between these two clubs on March 12.


Union 0, Pachuca 0

The Philadelphia Union also failed to take advantage of home field in the first leg, playing out a 0-0 draw with Pachuca at Subaru Park.

Both Andre Blake and Carlos Moreno registered three-save clean sheets as the scene shifts to Mexico next week.

Mikael Uhre as denied twice in the opening 20 minutes by Moreno while Oussama Idrissi’s 31st minute effort was gathered by Blake.

Pedro Pedraza became the second Pachuca player denied by Blake in the match before Elias Montiel’s last-gasp effort was also repelled by the Jamaican international.

The Union did not have the services of injured forward Julian Carranza, who scored three goals in the Round of 32 vs. Deportivo Saprissa.
