Champions Emerge at U16 and U12 Fischer Indoor National Championships


Action has wrapped up at the Fischer Indoor Junior Nationals, with champions being crowned in both the Under 16 and Under 12 divisions in Calgary, Alberta and Verdun, Quebec!

In the boys U16 division, one standout player swept both singles and doubles, while the girls category had multiple champions and great performances.

U16

In a loaded singles field which featured 40 tough competitors, it was third seeded Miko Lapalme of Montreal who came through for his second indoor national title, dropping one set en route to the championship.

Lapalme rallied to beat first seed Quincy Qianzhou Yao 6-7(9), 6-3, 6-2 in the semi-finals before defeating Felix Roussel of Vaughan, Ontario 6-2, 6-4 in the championship match.

Meanwhile, he paired up with Yao in doubles as the first seeds coasted to victory, without dropping a set the entire week. Lapalme and Yao defeated Rafael Brown and Randy Rakotonavahy 6-1, 6-1 in the final.

In the Girls division, Clémence Mercier of Saint Roch-Ouest, Quebec backed up her first overall seeding, navigating a strong field to win her fifth overall National championship and second in singles. Mercier came through a tough second round match 5-7, 6-4, 6-1 over Amy Lu, and in the semi-finals produced another comeback win, rallying past Anastasia Malysheva 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. In the finals, she defeated fifth seed Brooke Feth 6-1, 6-4 to hoist the title. Mercier also won the Under 18 National Outdoor Championships this past summer and is no. 2 in the country for her age category.

In the Girls doubles division, Andrea Cabio of Milton, Ontario and Charlize Gabrielle Celebrini of B.C. captured the title, winning a closely contested final 7-6(5), 1-6, 10-5 over the no. 1 seeds Anastasia Malysheva and Andrea Taylor. Cabio was also champion at the Outdoor Nationals last summer in doubles.

Meanwhile Charlize was runner-up in both singles and doubles last summer at the Outdoor National Championships. She is also the younger sister of star hockey prospect Macklin Celebrini, who is widely projected to be picked first overall in the upcoming 2024 NHL Draft later this year.

U12

The U12 category had several winners this year as it was played in a round robin format, across eight groups in both the boys and girls divisions in singles.

The Boys singles champions were: Ngodo Yvan-Raphael Mefire, Damian Smith, Arthur Zhyznomirskyy, Liam John Suh, Pak Yui Zenith Fung, Ezekiel Zacharias Cheruvallath, Benjamin Woo, and Ethan Levy.

The Girls champions in singles were as follows: Clara Vicol, Joni Faye Colburne, Emma Ciobanu, Victoria Koniouchine, Emma Culrassier, Amelia Mishelle Simutin, Stefaiia Petrova, and Alessia Lungu.

In boys doubles, no. 2 seeds Liam John Suh and Arthur Zhyznomirskyy captured the title, defeating Damian Smith and Oscar Sounitsky 6-2, 6-0 in the championship match.

Joni Faye Colburne and Clara Vicol, the top seeds in the girls doubles category, captured the championship with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over runner-up team Zimo Xiang Bai and Sophie Rachel Murray.

The action continues this week with the U14 event from Vancouver and U18 Junior Fischer Indoor Nationals tournament in Toronto.
