After years of stocking up on talent and handing out contracts to big-name players, it appears the Los Angeles Chargers are finally ready to hit reset on their roster.
The Chargers are one of the biggest disappointments of the 2023 NFL season as they were unable to make the postseason again despite having a mostly-healthy Justin Herbert under center.
Los Angeles got dealt several tough blows with injuries to star players, though it doesn’t excuse how the team looked every week.
Owner Dean Spanos cleaned house and hired former Baltimore Ravens executive Joe Hortiz to become the team’s new general manager.
Hortiz served as Baltimore’s director of player personnel for the past five seasons and will need to use his expertise to help reshape the team.
When it comes to free agency, Hortiz revealed the Charger’s approach via Jonathan Jones of CBS.
“We’ll be active in a smart, creative way,” Hortiz said.

Unfortunately for Los Angeles, they’ve got several bloated contracts on their books that have them over the salary cap and thus unable to do too much in free agency.
Players like Mike Williams, Keenan Allen, and Khalil Mack are all owed significant amounts of money and one or more of them could be salary cap casualties.
Hortiz will need to make some tough decisions in the next few weeks, though it should be with the long-term vision of the team in mind.
How he and the rest of the front office maneuver around the salary cap is anyone’s guess, but he’s got the pedigree to make something happen.
