Chelsea’s rollercoaster season under Mauricio Pochettino
It has been a turbulent season for Chelsea under Mauricio Pochettino. The team has experienced both highs and lows, struggling to find consistency in both scoring goals and defending. Currently sitting seventh in the Premier League, Chelsea has faced challenges in their performance throughout the season. However, recent improvements have slightly turned their fortunes around, with promising displays in cup competitions such as reaching the Carabao Cup final and the FA Cup semifinal.
Despite their cup successes, it is clear that Chelsea’s league form is a cause for concern and changes to the squad may be necessary in the upcoming summer transfer window. Football pundit Paul Merson has shared his thoughts on what areas Chelsea should focus on strengthening.
In his column on Sky Sports, Merson highlighted the need for addressing two key positions within the team:
“Chelsea haven’t been consistent enough… They’re doing well at the moment, fair play, and they’re right in the race for Europe. They’ve got into a final, a semi-final… and it could turn out to still be not a bad season.”
Chelsea need a striker and a defender
Merson emphasized the importance of bringing in new players to strengthen the team, acknowledging that Chelsea still have a way to go in challenging top clubs like Man City and Arsenal. He suggested the need for an experienced centre-half to replace Thiago Silva and another quality centre-forward to enhance the team’s attacking prowess.
While Chelsea has seen glimpses of potential in players like Jackson, there remains a gap in finishing chances and solidifying the defense. The team requires a clinical striker like Victor Osimhen from Napoli to convert midfield-created opportunities into goals consistently. Additionally, the departure of Silva at the end of the season leaves a void in leadership and experience that must be filled to address defensive vulnerabilities.
