The Chicago Bears officially began the next era of their franchise when they took Caleb Williams first overall in the 2024 NFL Draft.
For months, Williams was expected to go first and the Bears finally made it official when NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell read his name at the podium.
Aside from Williams, Chicago also gave him a new weapon to work with in Washington receiver Rome Odunze, who would’ve been the first wideout off the board in nearly any other draft.
Williams walks into arguably the best situation of any rookie quarterback in NFL history as he has a supporting cast of DJ Moore, Keenan Allen, Cole Kmet, D’Andre Swift, and Odunze.
However, the Bears also made sure to address special teams as they took Tory Taylor on Day 3 of the draft.
Williams reached out to his new teammate to let him know that he might not see the field much, via Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic.
“New Bears punter Tory Taylor said he got this text from Caleb Williams: ‘Hey, you’re not going to punt too much here,’” Fishbain tweeted.
Williams is obviously confident in the offense and his ability to get the team into scoring position, eliminating the need for a punter like Taylor.
It was a joke from the team’s new starting quarterback as they’re not expected to score on every possession, but it does speak to how electric they look on paper.
Williams was the perfect fit for a Chicago team that’s been searching for their next face of the franchise and it’ll be fun to see how he does in his rookie year.
