There is a common refrain around NFL circles that running backs don’t matter as much as other skill position players, but that sentiment doesn’t apply to San Francisco 49ers star Christian McCaffrey.
The 49ers went all-in last season when they traded a haul of picks for McCaffrey and he’s been nothing short of amazing for his first full season in the Bay Area.
McCaffrey is the league’s premier dual-threat running back and is a match made in heaven for head coach Kyle Shanahan.
The running back poses all sorts of problems in the backfield and is a large reason why San Francisco is considered the favorite to come out of the NFC.
In Week 17 against the Washington Commanders, McCaffrey continued to do what he does best and that’s earn yards both rushing and receiving.
In the first half, McCaffrey set a huge franchise milestone via FOX.
“McCaffrey is the first 49ers player with 2000+ scrimmage yards in a season since 2006 (Frank Gore),’ FOX tweeted.

Frank Gore is a beloved figure among the 49ers fanbase and McCaffrey joins him after the work he did against the Commanders.
Shanahan keeps McCaffrey on the field almost the entire game, but has been more conservative with him recently.
Opposing teams have to be jealous of what McCaffrey’s doing this season and he’s built a legitimate MVP case for himself.
It’s unlikely that McCaffrey actually wins the award because of the bias with quarterbacks, but there’s no denying that he’s the best offensive player that San Francisco has.
