In front of a very pro-Club América crowd at Dignity Health Sports Park, the reigning Mexican champions overcame a first-half deficit to beat Tigres UANL 2-1 and lift the 2024 Liga MX Super Cup in Carson on Saturday afternoon.
Typically the Campeón de Campeones is contested between the Liga MX Apertura and Clasura champions to kick off the new season but due to Club América capturing back-to-back titles in the 2023 Apertura and 2024 Clasura, Saturday’s match was dubbed the Liga MX Super Copa (a.k.a. Liga MX Super Cup) with América battling 2023 Campeón de Campeones winners Tigres UANL.
Tigres jumped out to a commanding start, scoring inside seven minutes with a gorgeous one-touch passing combination down the right flank involving four Tigres players before being finished off by Juan Brunetta.
Before long, Club América struck back with a stunner of their own off the foot of Javairô Dilrosun to level the score at 1-1 in the 24th minute.
With ten minutes remaining in the first half, América struck again through USMNT winger Alex Zendejas serving up his assist on a silver platter for captain Henry Martin to tap in.
Despite Tigres continuing to control the game flow while dominating possession, América was the more clinical team in the first half. Tigres took triple the number of shots, created double the number of big chances, and still went into halftime down 2-1.
América exerted more control on the match with the lead in the second half by flipping possession in their favor but still didn’t generate many chances, though they no longer needed to. Tigres would continue banging on the door with their significantly higher shot total as they chased the game but it was not enough to break through.
Club América walked away 2-1 winners to lift the 2024 Liga MX Super Cup and head into the 2024 Liga MX Apertura on a continued high.
