Argentina’s manager, Lionel Scaloni, has revealed that Lionel Messi may not be available for the upcoming quarter-final match against Ecuador in the Copa America 2024. Scaloni emphasized that he will give Messi the necessary time to evaluate his fitness and will only include him in the lineup if he feels completely ready.
Lionel Messi’s Fitness Concerns
Messi, a key figure in Copa America 2024, has been struggling with his physical condition recently. He has faced several injury setbacks during his time at Inter Miami, missing multiple games in the 2023 season and sitting out six MLS matches this year due to fitness issues.
Despite wanting to make an impact in the tournament, Messi encountered an adductor problem after Argentina’s second group stage match, forcing him to miss the third game. Fans hoped to see him return for the quarter-final showdown against Ecuador, but his fitness remains in doubt leading up to the crucial match at the NRG Stadium.
Scaloni’s Approach to Messi’s Fitness
Addressing the media before the Ecuador game, Scaloni provided an update on Messi’s condition. While the Inter Miami star felt positive on Tuesday, his participation in the Copa America 2024 knockout stage is not guaranteed.
Scaloni stated (via NDTV):
“Yesterday we had good feelings and we’ll take this day to define the team based on the response we get today.
“We’ll try to get him in and then, if he’s not (ready), we’ll look for the best solution for the team. I’ll talk to him today. I think it’s fair that he takes his time and trains as much as possible.”
Despite not scoring yet in the current tournament, Messi has showcased his playmaking abilities by providing an assist, creating chances, completing dribbles, and delivering accurate long balls in the two matches he has played.
