Cocciaretto Secures WTA 250 Title in Hobart on Her Second Attempt

In a thrilling finale at the WTA 250 Hobart International, Elisabetta Cocciaretto emerged victorious, capturing her second career title by defeating American Iva Jovic, the No. 3 seed, in straight sets. This remarkable achievement serves as a resounding boost to the Italian player as she prepares for the Australian Open.

Cocciaretto, who came into the tournament ranked No. 80, was determined to make a mark after experiencing a disappointing trajectory in recent years. Just three years prior, she fell just short in the final against Lauren Davis. This time, she demonstrated a newfound tenacity, culminating in her triumph.

Starting from the qualifications, the 24-year-old displayed impressive form, battling through seven matches, dropping only one set along the way. Her remarkable run included an extraordinary comeback against the fourth seed Ann Li, recovering from 6-1, 5-3 down in the second round. As her confidence grew, so did her level of play, with Cocciaretto not conceding more than four games in a set for the remainder of the tournament.

In her final match against Jovic, Cocciaretto started strong, breaking serve early and maintaining control with powerful and precise serving. The first set exemplified her dominance, and she continued the trend into the second set by securing another early break. Throughout the match, her defensive resilience and aggressive approach made it difficult for Jovic to gain any traction.

Reflecting on her unexpected success, Cocciaretto expressed her surprise at winning the title. “When I came here, I didn’t expect at all to win,” she stated. “I just wanted to play as many matches as possible, and I ended up playing seven. I’m really proud of myself.”

This victory not only marks a significant milestone in Cocciaretto’s career but also places her among a select group of qualifiers to win the Hobart title, following in the footsteps of champions like Mona Barthel, Garbiñe Muguruza, and Lauren Davis. Following her triumph, she will ascend 24 positions in the rankings to No. 56.

Cocciaretto’s next match will be against Austria’s Julia Grabher at the Australian Open, while fellow finalist Jovic is set to take on Katie Volynets in Melbourne.

In the doubles final, Indonesia’s Janice Tjen and Poland’s Katarzyna Piter claimed the title, defeating Belgian Magali Kempen and Anna Siskova from the Czech Republic convincingly. This marks Tjen’s third WTA doubles title and Piter’s sixth, illustrating their growing prowess on the doubles circuit.

As the dust settles in Hobart, Cocciaretto’s triumph stands out as a testament to her growth and determination, setting the stage for a promising year ahead.
