Coco Gauff has been sensational on American soil in the past eight months, but her 20-match winning streak in the country has ended.
The American players are traditionally very good when an event takes place on their home soil. This is nothing new because many players perform really well when they’re on home soil, which is a case in point with French and Australian players at their Grand Slams as well.
What makes American players more dangerous is that many events take place in the United States. Gauff has benefitted from this in the past, especially recently when she put together a 20-match winning streak in the country.
It started back at the Citi Open in Washington, where she won her first WTA 500 trophy, and she followed up on that triumph at the Cincinnati Open, where she went all the way to win her maiden WTA 1000 trophy.
She followed up that run with her maiden Grand Slam trophy run, which extended her winning streak on American soil to 16 matches. With four wins this week at the Indian Wells Open, the streak extended to 20 matches, but it didn’t extend beyond that.
To the great disappointment of many fans attending the match between Gauff and Maria Sakkari, the Greek player prevailed in three sets, ending not only Gauff’s run in the desert but also her 20-match winning streak on home soil.
It was the first time Gauff had been beaten on American soil since her Miami Open exit to Anastasia Potapova last year. It wasn’t the best of matches from Gauff, who admittedly wasn’t playing her best tennis all week long.
Sakkari has been tremendous at this event in the past, so it’s not a huge surprise for her. She was in the final in Indian Wells two years ago, and she’s in the final once more against Iga Swiatek. As for Gauff, she can start a new streak in Miami in a few days.
