Coco Gauff, the newly crowned champion of the 2023 Roland Garros, made a heartfelt gesture this November by engaging with young tennis enthusiasts in New Orleans East. Her visit coincided with the recent refurbishment of the tennis courts at Joe W. Brown Park, a project that the USTA initiated to honor her remarkable achievement.

Earlier this year, the USTA launched the US Open Legacy Initiative, pledging a generous $3 million to revitalize public tennis facilities across America—a sum reflecting Gauff’s winnings from the 2023 US Open. The choice of New Orleans for this project comes as no surprise, given Gauff’s strong familial ties to the city.

During her surprise clinic, Gauff expressed her deep connection to New Orleans, stating, “This city holds a special place in my heart, and being able to come back here is a fantastic experience.” Her commitment to supporting young players is evident, shaped by her own experiences growing up playing on public courts in Delray Beach, Florida.

Brian Vahaly, Interim Co-CEO and Chairman of the Board of USTA, emphasized the significance of Gauff’s contributions, noting that the initiative has facilitated enhancements at over 100 facilities nationwide, promoting wider access to tennis within local communities. He remarked, “By refurbishing the public courts at Joe W. Brown Park, we are expanding access to the game and giving more players a better place to play.”

The day’s activities were organized in conjunction with local nonprofit A’s and Aces, which operates programs and events at the park’s courts. This organization is part of the USTA Foundation’s National Junior Tennis & Learning network, which comprises over 270 groups across the country dedicated to providing affordable tennis, education, and life skills to underserved youth.

Gauff’s presence and her dedication to helping nurture future generations of tennis players illustrates her commitment to giving back to the sport she loves. As she continues to rise in the professional ranks, her efforts off the court resonate just as strongly as her accomplishments on it, showcasing the transformative power of sports in the community.
