The Australian Open has kicked off with unprecedented enthusiasm, drawing record crowds over its initial days. Among the standout performances, Coco Gauff, the tournament’s third seed, showcased her skills on the Margaret Court Arena, decisively defeating Olga Danilovic with a score of 6-2, 6-2, advancing to the third round without breaking a sweat.
Gauff’s dominance was apparent from the beginning as she quickly established a commanding 5-0 lead in the first set, and maintained that momentum into the second set by going up 3-0. Reflecting on her match, Gauff acknowledged a minor slip, noting, “I missed a backhand to go up 5-0 but other than that it was perfect.” She credited her solid performance, which included winning 26 out of 31 points on her first serve and making only 16 unforced errors, compared to Danilovic’s 34.
Next up for Gauff is her close friend and fellow American, Hailey Baptiste, who advanced with a convincing 6-2, 6-1 victory over Australian qualifier Storm Hunter. This marks Baptiste’s first appearance in the third round of the Australian Open after previously failing to progress in two attempts. Gauff expressed her excitement about the upcoming matchup, stating, “It won’t be easy, but I’m just proud of us to both make it at this stage.”
Baptiste’s performance against Hunter was impressive, as she tripled her opponent’s winner count, dominating from start to finish. With this victory, she continues to build on her momentum from a solid opening-round win against Taylor Townsend.
During her match, Gauff effectively maneuvered Danilovic around the court, taking control early by winning three of the first four games at deuce. After a confident hold, Gauff surged ahead to 5-0 within just 21 minutes. Although Danilovic found her footing later in the set, she was unable to recover from the deficit, allowing Gauff to secure the first set in 37 minutes.
Post-match, Gauff reflected on her strategy, aiming for aggressive yet controlled play—a departure from a previously flatter approach. She emphasized the importance of utilizing spin to create openings against her opponents. “I think with the way my strokes are, that just makes more sense for me. It’s about being aggressive but also finding the right balance,” she noted.
As the tournament progresses, both players will look to capitalize on their respective successes, setting the stage for an intriguing all-American clash in the next round.
