The USMNT came into the tournament believing they had an opportunity to make a statement in the Copa America. They came into the match knowing they needed a result. They failed to do both as a 1-0 loss sees them fail to make it out of the group stage. It was a brutal match, certainly to watch, but even more so from a physicality aspect as Uruguay showed no signs of coasting to first place in the group and looked very much like a team with a desire to assert their dominance. The US looked up for the fight from the start but ultimately were unable to score a goal in a match they knew they almost certainly needed to win. There will be a lot of scapegoats and not many heroes after a night like tonight that sees the US fail to advance in the most important matches they will play in the next two years.
