CONCACAF’s successful W Gold Cup has led to the creation of a new club competition slated to begin in August 2024.
The W Champions Cup will debut later this year and run into 2025, CONCACAF announced Tuesday. The inaugural competitions will feature the best women’s clubs from North America, Central America and the Caribbean, and the winner can qualify for the new FIFA Women’s Club World Cup, which is slated to debut in the near future.
“Launching the Concacaf W Champions Cup is a very exciting next step on our journey of developing all aspects of women’s football in our region”, said Concacaf President and FIFA Vice President Victor Montagliani. “When we launched our Concacaf W women’s football strategy in 2019 we focused on creating an enhanced calendar of national team competitions that benefited all of our Member Associations, and on providing opportunities for women and girls to develop a passion for football at all levels of the sport.
“We have made significant progress in those areas, albeit with much work more to do, and the growth of leagues and clubs is an important next phase in our strategy,” added Montagliani. “The W Champions Cup will provide a tremendous sporting opportunity for clubs in Concacaf, and we look forward to the first edition commencing in August this year, to crowning a first champion in May 2025, and to delivering an exciting pathway to the new FIFA Women’s Club World Cup.”
Preliminary Round and Group Stage matches of the 2024-25 inaugural W Champions Cup are slated for August, September, and October 2024 with a final four centralized semifinals and final set for May 2025.
A total of 11 clubs will take part in the competition, with the United States and Mexico both sending three representatives into the group stage. Panama, Costa Rica, and Jamaica will all have one club represent their respective countries while Canada and El Salvador are slated to have one representative apiece in the tournament’s preliminary round.
The winner of the Canada-El Salvador preliminary round matchup will join the remaining nine clubs in the group stage. The group stage will consist of two groups of five teams apiece, with each team playing a total of four group stage matches (two at home; two away) in August, September, and October.
At the conclusion of group stage play, the top two clubs from each group will progress to a final four centralized event played in May.
The news comes only two days after the conclusion of the inaugural W Gold Cup in which the U.S. women’s national team defeated Brazil 1-0 in the tournament final in San Diego.
