Cordoba | Dalderi downs defending champion to make final.

A new name will appear on the register of ATP champions when the Cordoba Open is completed on Sunday with both protagonists chasing their maiden titles.

The two finalists are also both qualifiers who have upset the rankings by defeating both last year’s finalists at this year’s semi-final stage.

Born in Argentina but an Italian national, Luciano Darderi booked a spot in the final after winning a rollercoaster third set against second seed Sebastain Baez, the defending champion 6-1 3-6 6-3.

In Sunday’s final the 21-year-old will face Argentina’s Facundo Bagnis who defeated his countryman Fedreico Coria, last year’s finalist, 6-3 7-5.

“Baez is an amazing player, and I am very happy for the victory,” Darderi said. “Bagnis and I are both fighters, so it will be a tough match tomorrow. I am going to be ready as I try to win my first title.”

Meanwhile Bagnis, world ranked 207 at the start of the week, is is the lowest-ranked player to reach a final in three years.

The 33-year-old, who saved 10 of 11 break points faced against Coria reached his lone final in Santiago in 2021.

“Today was a real battle. Federico is a real fighter like me. Being in the final here in my country, I’m really happy,” Bagnis said.
