Rain has disrupted the Cordoba Open schedule with two matches still to be played out before the quarter final line up is completed.
Spain’s Jaume Munar, who had a very quiet season last year, produced the upset of the ATP 250 level event when he took out the home favourite and top seed, Fernando Cerundolo, 7-5 6-4 to reach the last eight.
The Spaniard converted four of his eight break opportunities while saving 10 of 12 break points against him to deny the Argentinian in front of his home crowd.
“It’s something I’ve been struggling [with] in the past. But I’ve learned to have a good attitude on that,” Munar said of playing Argentines in front of their partisan crowds. “I remember a lot of matches here: I played Schwartzman a couple of times, I played Pella also in Buenos Aires, Delbonis, many of them. I’m getting older so I’m getting more mature and it’s something that helps to have that experience to handle the moment. But of course it’s always difficult.”
The 25-year-old Cerundolo, the world No.22 was the top seed of a Tour event for the first time in his career and is the fifth consecutive Argentine to start the week at the top of the draw.
Munar’s quarter-final opponent will be another home favourite in Francisco Bagnis who defeated eighth-seeded Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena 7-6(5) 6-4 earlier.
Also through is Argentina’s Federico Coria — runner-up at last year’s event —who also advanced following a 6-1 6-3 victory against Spain’s Albert Ramos Vinolas and will face next, Tomas Martin Etcheverry, the third seed who beat Spain’s Bernabe Zapata Miralles 7-5 6-4.
Currently four Argentines have made the last eight and the defending champion, Sebastian Baez and Roman Andres Barruchaga could join them but they have yet to complete their second round matches.
