Cornwall Wins Senior Golf Championship – Golf News

CORNWALL CAPTURE SENIOR CROWN - Golf News

Cornwall secured their first-ever victory in the Senior Men’s County Finals, defeating Lincolnshire in a thrilling final day at Torquay Golf Club in Devon.

This historic win made them the first team from the South West to claim the trophy since its establishment in 2005.

After a rain-shortened first day, Cornwall defeated Lincolnshire 3.5-2.5, while Durham also triumphed over BB&O with the same score. On day two, BB&O managed a 5-4 victory against Cornwall, and Lincolnshire dominated Durham with a score of 7-2.

With all teams tied on match points going into the final day, the competition intensified.

Despite losing the morning foursomes to Durham on the last day, Cornwall rallied in the afternoon singles matches to secure a 5-4 win overall. This meant that if BB&O drew or narrowly defeated Lincolnshire, Cornwall would emerge as champions.

DRAMATIC FINISH

Lincolnshire, also seeking their maiden title, led 2-1 after the morning foursomes. However, in a nail-biting conclusion, BB&O’s Gary Mumford held off Paul Wharton to win the final singles match on the last hole, resulting in an overall 4.5-4.5 draw and granting Cornwall the title.

Despite Lincolnshire accumulating the most game points at 14, surpassing Cornwall’s 12.5, Cornwall’s two match victories secured them the trophy.

The winning team of eight included Richard Jones, Mike Reynard (Trevose), Ian Ashenden (China Fleet), Ian Veale (Newquay), Simon Knowles (Perranporth), Mark Blaber (Carlyon Bay), Mark Johnson (Carlyon Bay), and Guy Norris (Trevose).

Colin Trestrail of Lincolnshire was named the player of the tournament, winning all five of his matches.
