Cristian Romero, the captain of Tottenham, is rumored to have a unique clause in his contract that allows him to transfer to a top-tier Spanish club for a fee of €60 million.
The Argentine defender, who extended his contract last summer, seems to be preparing for a departure from Tottenham amid ongoing challenges faced by the team this season.According to reports from MARCA, this clause was intentionally included to help ensure he wouldn’t miss out on a move to Spain due to financial demands.
Cristian Romero’s Clause Restricted to Spain’s Elite Three
This provision means the €60 million fee isn’t available to all clubs, but specifically to Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Atlético Madrid.
Currently, Atlético, managed by Diego Simeone, is seen as the most likely destination. Simeone has expressed a strong admiration for Romero, publicly calling himself a “big fan” of the player’s skills and style.
Real Madrid is also monitoring the situation as they aim to rejuvenate their aging defense, showing interest in Romero’s abilities and being aware of the release clause.
Barcelona, despite facing financial difficulties, is still keeping an eye on the developments around Romero.
Romero Likely to Depart Tottenham After Difficult Season
The existence of this clause arises during a period when Romero’s rapport with Tottenham appears to have soured.
Tottenham is currently fighting to avoid relegation, sitting precariously just one point above the relegation zone in 17th place.
Romero has voiced his discontent, publicly criticizing the club’s management for their inactivity during the January transfer window.
While a move to La Liga seems probable for the esteemed defender, his transfer to Premier League side Manchester United cannot be excluded, especially as the Red Devils are reportedly ready to offer him an enticing contract.
