Darderi clinches fifth title on clay in Santiago

Luciano Darderi wrapped up the South American clay court swing on a high note, securing the BCI Seguros Chile Open title in Santiago on Sunday. The Italian powerhouse triumphed over Germany’s Yannick Hanfmann, winning with a scoreline of 7-6(6), 7-5, marking a significant milestone in his burgeoning career.

Darderi’s victory is especially remarkable as it signifies his second final of the season, having previously reached the title match in Buenos Aires just two weeks prior. This win is particularly meaningful since it adds to his impressive tally, giving him five titles out of six finals on clay since the beginning of 2024. With a total of 48 clay court victories during this timeframe, he is closing in on Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo, who leads with 49 wins.

In a post-match interview, Darderi expressed his delight, stating, “It’s feeling really great. I didn’t expect to win this week here because I never played more than the quarter-final here, so I’m very happy. It’s my second final of the year, so taking a title early is very impressive and I take a lot of confidence for the rest of the year.”

This victory also holds historical significance as it marks the fifth occasion in the Open Era where two Italian players have claimed tour-level titles in the same week. Just last week, Flavio Cobolli secured a title in Acapulco, further demonstrating the rise of Italian tennis on the global stage, echoing their earlier achievement in March 2025 when Darderi won in Marrakech and Cobolli took home the Bucharest title.

The match was tightly contested, especially in the first set, where Darderi twice faced the specter of defeat but showed remarkable resilience. After losing an early break to go down 1-2, he quickly regained his footing, winning eight consecutive points to take a 3-2 lead. Although both players served well—Darderi recording six aces compared to Hanfmann’s ten—his ability to break serve at a crucial moment in the final game ultimately sealed his victory.

With this win, Darderi not only cements his status as a formidable competitor on clay but also raises expectations for his performance in the coming tournaments this season.
