David de Gea contemplating retirement unless key transfer condition is fulfilled – Manchester United Update

Ex-Man United star David de Gea considering retirement if key transfer condition is not met - Man United News And Transfer News

Former Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea is reportedly contemplating retirement if he does not receive an offer from a major club to be their starting goalkeeper.

De Gea parted ways with United last summer, effectively bringing the curtain down on a successful 12-year stay at Old Trafford.

The Spaniard left upon the expiry of his contract after failing to agree an extension with the club.

The 33-year-old began the 2023/24 season as a free agent and he finished the entire campaign without a new club despite being linked to a number of outfits both in Europe and abroad.

De Gea had been mentioned to be on the radar of teams such as Real Betis, Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich, and Arsenal.

It’s believed that Saudi Pro League clubs also made attempts to secure his signature, but he rejected their overtures.

Jamie Jackson of The Guardian has now given a key update on De Gea’s transfer situation and what the future could hold for him even as the summer transfer window continues.

“David de Gea may retire if he does not receive an offer to be the first-choice goalkeeper at a major club. The former Manchester United and Spain No 1 has rejected several approaches, including from Saudi Arabia, with money not a prime motivator.”

“De Gea is retaining fitness in the hope of an offer from the right club and from a manager who views him as being in his prime.”

“After departing United in the summer De Gea, who will be 33 in November, would like to play for a club capable of competing for major honors.”

Jackson added, “De Gea is thought to be disappointed regarding the manner of his departure from United after his contract expired.”

With United, De Gea won the Premier League, FA Cup, two League Cups, and the Europa League. He made 545 appearances for the 20-time English champions, a club record for a goalkeeper.
